What is CBD?

  • Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical in the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as cannabis or hemp.

  • Each of our bodies has a set of receptors that interacts with cannabis compounds called cannabinoids, like CBD. These receptors, found throughout the body, comprise the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex signaling system that ensures our bodies maintain homeostasis.

  • Put another way, the endocannabinoid system keeps us in balance by directing the communication traffic in our bodies. Cannabinoids such as CBD interact with this system, mimicking natural compounds (called endocannabinoids) produced by the body.

  • If you’re hoping to reduce inflammation and relieve muscle and joint pain, a topical CBD-infused oil, lotion or cream – or even a bath bomb -- may be the best option. Alternatively, a CBC patch or a tincture or spray designed to be placed under the tongue allows CBD to directly enter the bloodstream.

  • Chronic pain. Further human studies are needed to substantiate claims that CBD helps control pain. One animal study from the European Journal of Pain suggests CBD could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis when applied to skin. Other research identifies how CBD may inhibit inflammatory and neuropathic pain, which are difficult treat.

Broad-spectrum CBD

products contain a range of naturally occurring compounds from the hemp plant, but,

do not contain THC -(tetrahydrocannabinol.)

Full-spectrum

products contain the same compounds as broad-spectrum products. However, they usually also contain low quantities of THC, usually under 0.3%Trusted Source as mandated by federal law. This amount of THC is not enough to create the ‘high’ effect that many people associate with cannabis.

Because full-spectrum CBD contains other compounds, including THC, the previously mentioned ‘entourage effect’ may increase its effects.

The ‘Entourage Effect’

The entourage effect is a phenomenon where several different compounds work together to achieve an effect that would be impossible for them to achieve on their own. This “accompanying“ effect is the sum of the effects that compounds can produce in the relationship to each other.

The ‘entourage effect’ hypothesizes that the presence of multiple compounds from the cannabis plant and its extracts maximizes its health benefits.
